Solid controls turned from solid metal, providing the utmost in long-term stability
I listen mainly to CD's from my Roksan Caspian M2 and have the HDVA 600 connected from the player's balanced outputs. The headphone amp drives the HD800's a treat. I did have the HDVD 800 on demo before purchasing the HDVA 600 and could detect no difference in sound quality, and not wanting the digital connections of the more expensive amp it made sense to go for the HDVA 600. The amp is very quiet and music seems to come from an inky black silence. I have some older recordings which have tape hiss but the Sennheiser amp with the HD800's seems to eliminate this. Bass is strong but not too much and soundstage is very wide and deep. Found that using balanced interconnects and balanced headphone cable (Sennheiser's CH800S) brings even more clarity and depth. Very stylish looking and nice build quality too. I recommend this amp for your HD800's if you don't need the digital options of its big brother.
Paired to an Audiolab MDAC and Audeze LCD 2 this amplifier is sublime. I have a very hi end Hifi system and I am happy to report this is a worthy alternative. Obviously the hifi is more costly but this setup most definitely matches it in all the areas you would except. Obviously it cannot provide the soundstage, bass depth and layering of a hifi setup but it totally matches it in the mids and treble extension. Onto the amplifier itself and I can report even straight out of the box the control of the music is effortless. I have read that it can sound a bit analytical compared to others but I cannot stress enough how natural and analogue this sounds. I often find that the speed of the music sounds quick on kit that isn't as refined in an attempt to sound precise but afters years of listening I have come to realise that this is a flaw and the pace of a track should not be altered by the kit. This is one of the many key areas where this amp shines. It provides a very neutral sound without any harshness. The bass has a liquid texture and blends into the mids seamlessly. Although this is amp is often partnered with the Sennheiser hi end headphones, do not assume it will not compliment your headphones well (especially planar magnetic phones). I can only imagine what it will sound like after a few hundred hours of burn in. Highest Recommendation.
As an HDVD800 owner, same amplifier as HDVA600, I can confirm, to my ear, combined with the HD800/ 800s nirvana is achievable for those of a classical persuasion! I love the form of this design and the components used - top notch.
